The lake stays frozen until the middle of April in most years. Most cabins in the valley were built from local spruce timber. Meltwater streams cut new paths across the tundra every spring.

Longer daylight in June changes the whole town's schedule. Berry picking season runs from late July into early September. Drying racks along the beach hold nets through the summer.

Wind from the northwest brings clear skies to the coast. A stone cairn marks the highest spot on the island. The community hall doubles as a school gym in winter.

Migrating geese rest on the shallow ponds near the point. The northern trail follows the shoreline for about nine kilometers. The old dock timbers are replaced a few at a time.
